East Bridge of the Great Belt Fixed Link in Denmark is the second longest suspension bridge
in the world, with a total span of 6,790 meters or 4.22 miles and free span of 1.624 meters or
just over one mile. The longest suspension bridge is the Japanese Akashi Kaikyo bridge with
a free span of 1,991 meters. The construction took 12 years to complete and was inaugurated on
June 14, 1998.
When Arnor lived in Denmark (1996 - 1999) he took the ferry accross the Great Belt many times
and the bridge was an awsome structure to look at.
The Danes have added some other incredible
constructions, like the
Oresund bridge between Denmark and Sweden and the latest is the
Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link between
Denmark and Germany.
